Kent Johnson awkwardly discourses and clumsily reads twelve and ½ new epigrams, to be included in the expanded edition of his recent booke of satirical trifles and incongruous pictures, Epigramititis: 118 Living American Poets [BlazeVox, 2006]. The second edition will be titled Epigramititis: 168 Living American Poets (also issued by BlazeVox and to weigh-in nigh 400 pages). The epigrammed writers honored on this recording are, in order of appearance, Jesse Glass, Noah Eli Gordon, Jonathan Mayhew, Jane Hirschfield, Cole Swensen, Katie Degentesh, Paul Hoover, Joshua Clover, Mark Doty, Tony Tost, Mark Weiss, and Joe Green.

Kent Johnson describes these poems as bagatelles and wonders why anyone could possibly be offended by them but, of course, he knows why. He expects that the Usual will happen. That is, nothing much. The usual silence and the usual return to business. Exactly. That\'s too bad.
Poetry (someone once told me and I believe it) is whatever manages to get said in spite of the various systems of tyranny that try to prevent that saying. If so, these are true poems. The various systems of tyranny are the political, the commercial, the aesthetic and then just whatever it is that enforces mediocrity and requires silence to protects mediocrity. It\'s inevitable that most \"poems\" and poets are simply trapped within these. It\'s glorious that, at times, some poems and poets break away and it\'s also not very puzzling that this happens only rarely. After all there are immense silly systems that constrain a poet and that enforce this sort of thing.
Happily, most of what I\'ve written in the second paragraph is too boring to even consider, just the usual generalizations and implicit in the same sort of silliness that is deplored. But all of this can be dismissed with a bit of the old Deverean laughter. The kind that Kent provides.
